A connection contractors know.

Fernco Standard Couplings provide a simple, dependable way to connect pipe. Available in sizes from 3/4" through 27", the line accommodates a broad range of pipe materials, diameters and transition applications.

One coupling. A secure transition.

Flexible coupling geometry allows Fernco to accommodate differences in outside diameter while creating a secure connection between compatible pipe materials.

Stainless steel clamps provide uniform compression around the coupling, while the flexible elastomeric body conforms to the pipe for a dependable seal.

Fernco Standard Couplings are designed around the outside diameters of the pipe materials being connected. Start with the pipe types on each side of the connection.

Size finder.

Choose the material and size of the pipe on each side. Fernco couplings seal by outside diameter, so the finder returns every Standard Coupling — plus the universal HULK where it fits — whose ends accept both of your pipes. Plastic and steel use Schedule 40 (IPS) outside diameters.

Coupling finder

Pick the material and size of the pipe on each side. The finder returns every Fernco coupling that fits both pipe outside diameters, grouped by where it is built to be used. Plastic and steel use Schedule 40 (IPS) outside diameters.

Recommended below groundBuried service, heavy earth loads, shear — Strong Back 1000 & 5000 RC, XL RC, and the universal HULK. Fernco recommends shielded couplings below grade for their added strength and alignment.
Recommended above groundDWV, repairs and above-grade transitions — Standard couplings, Standard XL, and Proflex shielded.

Recommendations are a general guide based on typical use. Coupling suitability depends on the pipe materials, application and burial conditions. Always confirm the coupling and its installation meet your local plumbing and building codes before installing.

Frequently asked questions.

Selection, installation and compliance answers for Standard Couplings.

What pipe materials do Fernco Standard Couplings connect?

Fernco Standard Couplings connect clay, cast iron, plastic, steel, concrete and ductile iron pipe, in same-material and transition joints. Each series is built for one pairing, for example the 1056 Series connects cast iron, plastic or steel to cast iron, plastic or steel, and the 1002 Series connects clay to cast iron, plastic or steel. Sizes run from 3/4 inch through 27 inches.

Can a Standard Coupling be used underground?

Yes. Fernco Standard Couplings are rated for above-ground and below-ground use. For buried transitions that carry heavy earth loads or where the pipes may shift, Fernco recommends a Strong Back RC shielded coupling, which adds a stainless steel shear ring for alignment and shear resistance. For above-ground transitions that need a shield, a Proflex shielded coupling adds a stainless steel shield.

Are Fernco couplings a permanent solution?

Yes. Fernco Standard Couplings are a permanent connection, not a temporary repair. They are specified for new construction as well as repair work, and they conform to ASTM D5926, ASTM C1173 and CSA B602. The elastomeric PVC body resists sewer gases, ultraviolet light, fungus growth and normal chemicals, and the stainless steel clamps do not rust. Install to the specified torque and within the pressure and temperature ratings, and the joint is built to stay sealed for the service life of the piping.

What is the installation torque for a Standard Coupling?

Tighten the clamps to 60 inch-pounds on couplings 15 inches and smaller, which use standard 300 series stainless steel clamps. Couplings 16 inches and larger ship with high torque clamps and are tightened to 120 inch-pounds. Pressure test the joint before backfilling or concealing it.

What are the pressure and temperature ratings?

The maximum test pressure is 4.3 psi (29.6 kPa). The maximum operating temperature is 140 degrees F non-consistent and the minimum is -30 degrees F. Standard Couplings are made for drain, waste, vent and sewer service, not for pressurized water systems.

Are Fernco couplings code compliant?

Fernco Standard Couplings conform to ASTM D5926, ASTM C1173 and CSA B602. Listings by series, including UPC and IPC, are on the Codes and Standards page. Always confirm the application with your local plumbing code.

Are Standard Couplings AIS and BABA compliant?

Standard Couplings 15 inches and smaller are made in the USA and comply with the American Iron and Steel (AIS) and Build America, Buy America (BABA) requirements. See the AIS and BABA page for the letter and the list of compliant product lines.

Are Standard Couplings resistant to chemicals and sunlight?

The elastomeric PVC body resists chemicals, ultraviolet light, fungus growth and normal sewer gases, and the stainless steel clamps are corrosion-resistant and rustproof. For a specific chemical and concentration, check the Acid Resistance Chart.

How do I pick the right part number?

Start with the pipe material on each side of the joint, which sets the series. Then match the outside diameter of each pipe to the size range on the coupling. Reducing couplings connect two different sizes, for example the 1056-64 joins 6 inch and 4 inch cast iron, plastic or steel. The dimensional drawings list the outside diameter range for every part. If the pipe type or diameter is uncertain, contact Fernco for sizing help.
