Built to Move with the Pipe

Expansion Joints

Accommodate thermal expansion and contraction in vertical above-ground DWV piping with a simple, one-piece connection.

Fernco Expansion Joint

Give the System Room to Move

Temperature changes cause piping systems to expand and contract. Fernco Expansion Joints are designed to accommodate that movement in vertical above-ground drain, waste and vent piping.

Their one-piece design provides a dependable alternative to complicated offset arrangements while helping reduce the risk associated with sliding components that can jam, freeze or leak.

Movement capacity: Accommodates up to 1-1/2" of pipe expansion and 1/2" of pipe contraction from a normal position of 4".

Built for Movement

The Expansion Joint allows the piping system to move as temperatures change while maintaining the connection.

Pipe contraction with Fernco Expansion Joint

Pipe Contraction

As the pipe contracts, the expansion joint accommodates shortening within the piping system.

Normal position of Fernco Expansion Joint

Normal Position

The expansion joint is installed in its normal position to provide room for movement in either direction.

Pipe expansion with Fernco Expansion Joint

Pipe Expansion

As temperatures increase and the pipe expands, the joint accommodates the additional pipe movement.

Important: Always consult the pipe manufacturer's expansion and contraction information to determine the number and placement of expansion joints required for the specific piping system.

A Simpler Way to Manage Thermal Movement

Designed specifically for vertical above-ground piping systems.

One-Piece Design

Positive positioning internal stops help provide consistent installation without relying on complex sliding components.

Vertical DWV Applications

Designed for vertical above-ground drain, waste and vent systems in both commercial and residential applications.

Rain Water Conductors

Expansion Joints can also be used in inside rain water conductor systems where thermal movement must be accommodated.

Installation

Proper positioning and independent pipe support are critical to allowing the joint to function as intended.

Step 01

Loosen Clamps

Loosen the stainless steel clamps without removing them from the expansion joint.

Step 02

Insert Pipe

Insert the pipe ends into the expansion joint to the internal pipe stops.

Step 03

Set Normal Position

Install the expansion joint in its normal position before securing the clamps.

Step 04

Torque Clamps

Tighten each clamp to 60 in.-lbs. of torque.

Step 05

Support & Test

Support the piping independently and leak test the system before concealment.

Temperature matters during installation. Extreme hot or cold conditions may cause the pipe to already be expanded or contracted as it acclimates. Pipe manufacturer guidance should be used when determining system movement and the number of expansion joints required.
